Mac complaints

I just got a Macbook pro recently. Being a long time user of Windows and Linux, I can not help pointing out something that this new Mac computer makes me unhappy, though it has many things pleased me.

  • No control key at right side
  • No delete key, the delete key on the keyboard is actually backspace on Microsoft keyboard, you have to use “mac” + “delete” to perform the deleting
  • No home, end, pageup and pagedown keys
  • No obvious “cut file” functionality available in Finder
  • No syntax highlight in Terminal defaultly

All legitimate gripes, here are workarounds:

No control key at the right side: No work around for that :) Out of curiosity, what are you using the Control Key for on a Mac?

No delete key: Fair enough. I just got used to command delete.

Home, End, PageUp, PageDown: Command Up and Down do Home/End. I use two finger scrolling for PageUp/PageDown. Honestly, the Mac isn’t as keyboard friendly as Windows, but once I got used to the trackpad, it doesn’t slow me down.

Cut file: It’s a design decision. On Windows, if you cut a file, and then cut another file, your original cut is lost and gone forever.

I fell in the same boat when I got my MBP early 07.

fn+delete does delete, also in windows (bootcamp/vm).

The biggest disappointment is that IntelliJ’s keymap makes it a challenge to set something useful, like -w, as the keys to close a document. Who wants to use -F4 to close a file. I sometimes cycle through several files a minute and that’s a long stretch over the left side of the keyboard.

Finder is one of the most deficient pieces of MacOS. If I want to copy a folder to a place where a folder where the same name already exists it prompts to replace. “Replace” really replaces and it’s not kind enough to use the trash can to delete the original. I avoid finder if at all possible.

That’s interesting. I am a developer so I spend most of my time to write codes. Here are some scenarios when I need those keys:

I use emacs as an editor, so the right control is useful for me. :-)

Home and End key help me to go to the beginning and the end of one line in the editor, I can use shift + home/end to select the whole line then perform some operations.

I think the track pad is the most cool and convenient thing on the Mac. I am just so used to non-Mac keyboard for so long :)

If you are a emacs user, it would be much easier for you.

    ctrl+a = home
    ctrl+e = end
    ctrl+d = delete

These work in most of mac applications.

If you need color in terminal, put following line in .bash_profile
    export TERM=xterm-color
